Statistical methods

Survival rates were calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared with the log rank test; survival graphs were truncated when the remaining number of recipients was fewer than 10. Multivariable analyses were performed using Cox proportional hazards models. The results of the multivariable analyses are reported as relative risks (RR) with a corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) or p-value. A RR > 1.0 indicates that the factor was associated with a higher probability of the event;

Centers and activity

The 2,769 lung transplantation procedures reported to the Registry in 2008 was the highest total of any year to date (Figure 1). Although the numbers are similar to last year, overall, the yearly growth in procedures has been steady during this past decade. As also displayed in Figure 1, this growth has largely been the result of consistent growth in the number of bilateral-lung transplants during the past 15 years, with the number of single-lung transplants essentially unchanged since the

Centers and activity

Participating centers reported performing 73 heart-lung transplants in 2008. The number of heart-lung transplant procedures has been similar since 2003, ranging from 73 to 86 transplants during this period (Figure 25). Yet, these numbers represent decreases in the number of procedures reported to the Registry throughout the 1990s, where more than 150 procedures were reported in most years. Data on procedures performed between January 1998 and June 2009 show about 50% of the heart-lung
